EPISODE SUMMARY

In this episode of The Charter School Insider, we’re joined by Reyes Claudio, the dynamic Chief Operations and Community Relations Officer at Brilla Public Schools. Reyes takes us deep into what it really means to serve a community — not just in theory, but in day-to-day practice.

She shares Brilla’s powerful philosophy that community engagement is not a tactic but a foundational value — and how that authenticity naturally drives enrollment. From transforming main offices into neighborhood resource hubs to throwing epic Bronx-style block parties, Brilla is rewriting the rules of school marketing through genuine connection. If you’re looking for strategies that don’t just boost numbers but build legacy, this is an episode you can’t miss.

EPISODE TAKEAWAYS

  • Community before conversion: Brilla’s enrollment strategy isn’t focused on marketing gimmicks — it’s rooted in showing up for families, listening, and serving first.
  • Main office as mission hub: Reyes describes how Brilla turns front offices into welcoming community centers, complete with resources and real-time problem-solving.
  • Enrollment as reflection, not the goal: When your community feels seen and supported, enrollment becomes a natural byproduct.
  • COVID didn’t stop Brilla — it clarified their purpose: Even in the toughest times, Brilla doubled down on service, distributed essential goods, and opened two new schools remotely.
  • Culture is lived, not laminated: From leadership picking up trash to staff hosting monthly cafecitos with families, the culture at Brilla is felt at every level.
  • Be unapologetically clear: Brilla sets bold expectations for families and isn’t afraid to say, “We might not be for everyone.” The result? Trust and retention.
